Mini STEM Day with Chapelhall Primary - Photo Recap

By Alistair Sharp

On behalf of Virax Biolabs, Dr Lucy Buckingham and Alistair Sharp organised and coordinated a science activity for Chapelhall Primary during the mini STEM day at Biocity Glasgow. The pupils worked with 96-well microplates, pipettes and food colouring in a simplified ELISpot experiment called ‘spot the cells’, where they evaluated the frequency and appearance of coloured spots. They added food colouring to the wells of a microplate containing fictional PBMC samples. After washing the plate, they saw the visualisation of coloured spots, each corresponding to a particular illness (red for chickenpox, green for COVID-19, blue for the common cold). With this simple and entertaining experience, the pupils assessed the immune system’s response to illnesses and learned some interesting science along the way. We thank our colleagues for taking the time out of the lab to help encourage the next generation of scientists, and we hope to see them performing a real ELISpot in years to come!
